Like many families, the Burgers’ homeschooling journey began during the COVID-19 lockdown. For Gerda and her daughter, Sumarie, the impact was especially profound.
After months of staying at home and relying on technology to connect with loved ones, returning to “normal” school life proved far more difficult than expected. Despite Gerda’s efforts, the idea of being in a crowded environment filled Sumarie with anxiety—even though her friends were waiting for her there.
“At first, homeschooling felt overwhelming,” Gerda admits. Attempts to find a learning centre didn’t work either, as the anxiety remained too great. Before long, nearly three years had passed with Sumarie missing school.
Then, Gerda discovered the Impaq Online School. Although it took some convincing, by the end of 2024 the Burger family decided to take the leap—and it completely transformed their lives.
“Sumarie has a new lease on life,” Gerda says. “She enjoys her classes and adores her teachers. They do so much for the kids, and we haven’t looked back for a single day.”
Today, the Burgers are thriving as an Impaq family. Grateful for the difference it has made, Gerda shares a heartfelt wish: “May you continue to make a difference in the lives of so many of our kids.”
