Impaq’s products and services are aligned with the national curriculum (CAPS). Specific subject requirements apply for the successful completion of Grades 10 to 12 and qualifying for the National Senior Certificate (NSC). All subjects require the appointment of a SACAI-certified invigilator for tests and exams.
Learners registered for the homeschool option must be assessed via Impaq’s assessment events or an Impaq-approved assessor for certain subjects with PAT components (practical tasks) as well as the orals for language subjects. An approved assessor is a SACE-registered teacher who has experience in teaching the relevant subject with at least the minimum experience as required by the assessment body, SACAI. It remains the parent’s responsibility to book an assessment event or appoint an approved assessor. This service is included in the Impaq Online School package.
For most subjects, the lesson material and language of instruction can be selected as either English or Afrikaans. Some subjects are, however, available only in English and/or isiZulu.
Before choosing their subjects, learners must do research on further studies or the avenues they would like to explore after completing Grade 12. If the learner would like to further their studies at a tertiary institution, it is vital to know the specific subjects required for entrance and the minimum level that needs to be achieved.
FET Phase learners must complete four compulsory subjects comprising of:
Please note:

Learners may choose between Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy. Learners may not register for both Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy – they must select one or the other. We strongly recommend that this selection is made based on:
Certain tertiary courses require Mathematics rather than Mathematical Literacy. However, Mathematical Literacy equips learners with the skills to solve real-world problems and the ability to interpret and critically analyse everyday situations.
We strongly recommend that, should a learner achieve a mark lower than 60% in their final (November) examination for Mathematics in Grade 9, the learner considers choosing Mathematical Literacy rather than Mathematics as they may find the subject particularly difficult. An excellent foundation in this subject is needed to succeed.
Mathematical Literacy focuses on real-life problems such as budgeting, interest calculations, and other everyday applications of mathematics. It provides learners with opportunities to analyse problems, develop strategies, and apply mathematical knowledge and reasoning in practical contexts. The subject aims to build mathematical competence in both content and context to solve problems effectively.
Mathematical Literacy is a subject aimed at developing practical mathematical skills for real-life situations.

Life Sciences is the scientific study of living things from the molecular level to their interactions with one another and their environments. To be accepted as a science, it is necessary to use certain methods for broadening existing knowledge or discovering new information. These methods must lend themselves to replication and a systematic approach to scientific inquiry. They must include formulating hypotheses and carrying out investigations and experiments as objectively as possible to test these hypotheses. Repeated investigations are carried out and adapted. The methods and results are analysed, evaluated, and debated before the community of scientists accepts them as valid.
The three primary reasons for taking Life Sciences are to provide useful knowledge and skills needed in everyday life, to expose learners to the scope of biological studies to stimulate interest in – and create awareness of – possible specialisations, and to provide sufficient background for further studies in one or more of the biological sub-disciplines.
Learning areas include:
Recommended time: Approximately 4 hours per week.
Please note: It is recommended that Mathematics be taken with Life Sciences, but it is not compulsory.
Physical Sciences investigates physical and chemical phenomena, which is done through scientific inquiry and application of scientific models, theories, and laws to explain and predict events in the physical environment. Practical activities are an integral part of Physical Sciences. The practical work is integrated with the theory and strengthens the teaching concepts. Practical work may take the form of simple, practical demonstrations or an experiment or practical investigation that can be done with household appliances and chemicals where possible; however, experiments can only be done with scientific apparatus and chemicals that might result in additional costs.
It is compulsory to take Mathematics with Physical Sciences.
