What’s covered?

  • Algorithms

  • Decomposition

  • Patterns

  • Abstraction

  • Internet security

  • Digital communication

  • An introduction to applications

  • An introduction to computers and robots

  • Coding on Resly

  • Novice Bot etiquette

Overview

Learners will gain a better understanding of pattern recognition, sequencing, and practical problem-solving. The Novice course for Grades 1 – 3 will introduce learners to the most fundamental mathematical and language concepts used in engineering, computer science and coding, and robotics.

Once learners have gained basic knowledge of computers and robots and what their fundamental components are, they will then progress to an introductory course on Resly. Learners will engage interactively with lessons that challenge their thinking. They will apply their fundamental knowledge in a variety of ways to test their newfound understanding. From learning how to make their first LED blink to coding object avoidance, learners will grasp how to fully code and control their Novice Bot. Learners will also learn about the importance of personal information safety and what it means to be a responsible coder.

Learning outcomes

In this course, students will learn the following:

  • Logical thinking and applying the concepts of analysis, abstraction, and prediction
  • Patterns and sequencing: how to identify, recognise, and create them
  • Data collection and analysis
  • A good understanding of algorithms, decoding, coding, loops, and conditionals
  • How to use IF-THEN and ELSE statements (and an introduction to block coding)
  • How to work in groups effectively using problem-solving techniques
  • Mathematical concepts such as patterns and pattern recognition, data handling, and problem-solving
  • Language concepts such as sequencing, algorithms (story writing), and decomposition (simplifying to retrieve the most important information)
  • Understanding what the internet is and internet safety
  • Understanding what applications are and personal information safety
  • How to identify parts of the Novice Bot’s mechanical system
